This traditional three-floor, timber-frame Mudurnu house and its expansive garden were partially acquired (in a co-ownership model with the local family and two female small business owners from Istanbul) in early 2020 in a deteriorated condition. Located in the southern end of Mudurnu’s designated historic district, Madanlar Konağı was lovingly restored in 2021-2022 to its former beauty, maintaining the unique Mudurnu styles both inside and out. Great care has been taken to assure traditional architecture and furnishings were faithfully conserved or re-created with local artisans and designers, down to the fabric coverings and electrical fixtures. For heating, installing coal burners and radiators was rejected in favour of unobtrusive fan coil systems operating off of a pine-wood and nut shell pellet furnace, lowering the carbon footprint and maintaining architectural integrity. No single use plastic items are used and water is served gratis in glass containers. Your host is a conservation professional with years of experience in Turkey and internationally, but she has a special attachment to Mudurnu, where she used to be the heritage site manager. She and her team welcome you to stay in this traditional Turkish home, enjoying the CittaSlow/Slow City atmosphere of Mudurnu, which also sustains the culture of the Akhi order, the ancient guild system formed over 700 years ago by the Ottomans and for which the town is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
